A group of Northland artists are crossing the border between Northland and the North Shore to deliver a broad specturm
Multi-media exhibition at The Depot in Devonport in March.
These artists have spent up to a year working on a pilot professional development programme called “Crossing the Gap”
which works with artists to enable them to cross the identified gaps from graduation to sustainability, and beyond.
There have been 3 strands of input for each artist on the programme; an arts specific mentor (a practicing senior artist
), business development input (to upskill each artist in developing their art practice as a business ) and life coaching
(an exploration of inspiration and extension through working towards and attaining goals across the spectrum of their
lives ).
The mentor group which has been working with these artists includes; Jenny Bennett, Laurence Berry, Shona Firman, Manos
Nathan, Richard Parker, Ellie Smith, Carin Wilson.
As part of the process of their professional development programme this exhibition is an opportunity for each individual
artist to exhibit in a context supportive of each other; and completes the fabrication of the supporting structures of
their own gap-crossing bridges.
“12 very exciting artists, 12 different skill sets, 12 different personalities. With support from a programme flexible
enough to be able to accommodate individual nuances and specialties are now combining to deliver an exhibition of
excellence which introduces these artists to the rest of the country.”
