How does one transform space into place?
Never before seen at Pataka, an innovative and experimental collection of perspectives designed to and performed in different sites throughout the complex. Like a book, Pataka opens its pages of blank spaces for local choreographers to imprint themselves on to the architecture of Pataka in their own unique ways.
We choose space but we make place……..
What do we bring to a new place, what do we draw out of it, how do we create for ourselves in the new a sense of place that defines and reflects our identity, that is both familiar and comforting, that gives balance to the endless cycle of changes that we encounter as a facet of contemporary life?
Each of the choreographers come from differing cultural and geographical histories. The unique characteristics of their individual experiences of ‘place’ in relation to their cultural up-bringing and the environments they experienced themselves in have combined to influence the way they produce or re-produce a sense of place or belonging for themselves as adults all living now in Porirua. “Filling in the Spaces” presents a series of new performance installation works that will explore these choreographers’ unique characteristics and how they manipulate them within new spaces to define themselves in the present moment.
Bringing new genres of performing arts into Pataka, augmenting the growing profile of contemporary art forms in the area, live performers offer their personal stories, culture and practice to be experienced within the architecture of the Porirua communities’ centre of culture, Pataka….the personal and the collective brought together.
Dance, music, visuals, theatre, spoken word and design are all woven together intimately to form the mat upon which the audiences experiences will sit. “Filling in the Spaces” takes the audience to a point of arrival and shares with them a place to consider their own imprint.
Directing and choreographing in the show is Cathy Livermore, dancer and choreographer, whose most recent work, Stitching Sandcastles, premiered at Pataka in June 2005. She is also a member of Atamira Dance Collective who in 2005 toured Ngai Tahu 32 nationally. Currently Cathy is the Contemporary tutor for the Bachelor of Applied Arts, Whitireia Community Polytech, Porirua.
