Award-winning Ake Ake Theatre Company has a reputation for creating spellbinding theatre of dance and voice, being
awarded “Best Theatre in FringeNZ festival 2003" and "Best Solo Performer FringeNZ 2004".
In The Operation of the Sun, Rhys Latton and Jessica Sutherland return to the plough, unearthing mementos amongst the
sands, words, driftwood and astrological firmament, presenting mind-bending theatre that opens the inner landscape.
Devised on the beaches of the West Coast, Dunedin and Island Bay, Ake Ake present a twisting theatrical journey that
satisfies your soul, amongst the shadows in the garden at the end of the world…

Rhys Latton [co-director], is an award-winning professional performer/dancer/teacher who has trained with Pantheatre in
Paris and the Kilda Northcott Contemporary Dance Co, and is a specialist in devised physical theatre. Rhys won Best Solo
Performer in 2004 with I Am Skelly, produced by Ake Ake Theatre. He holds a Dip.Grad. in Theatre Studies and a B(A),
Dip. Grad. in french (Otago University).
Jessica Sutherland [co-director] trained Drama and Dance in New Zealand as well as attending Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Paris.
She has 10 years national and international experience in physical theatre, dance and yoga.
Jessica holds a Masters in Theatre Directing from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School and Victoria University, Wellington, NZ.
Sefton Bates is a freelance lighting designer trained in Technical Production at Toi Whakaari; this is his sixth project
with Ake Ake. Recently he did a long stint as a lighting technician for a large cruise liner. Sefton studied sciences at
university and is excited by the geometric, quantum physics as influences and inspirations in The Operation of the Sun.
Rebekah Wild is a puppeteer from New Zealand and has performed in the UK, Belgium, Austria, U.S.A., Croatia, Eire,
Canada and Holland. She has worked with such companies as The angel Theatre, Jade Theatre Company, Silo Theatre and the
BBC on stages from the West End to the Puppet Theatre Barge. The 2004 artist in residence for ‘Wild Creations’, a
Creative NZ/DOC project, she has just completed touring New York and Europe with Shockheaded Peter and is very excited
about collaborating with Ake Ake on The Operation of the Sun.
Emily Buttle is an international performance artist specialising in stilt dance, distinctive costume design and original
imagery. Since 1997, her company Empress Stilt Dance has been based in The Netherlands comprising a group of 6 highly
skilled women who perform colourful walkabouts, theatre acts, short shows, club acts for a wide range of events around
Europe and further afield. Emily has received acclaim for her wonderful and dazzling costumes in Ake Ake's recent "Our
Secret Garden" and she added equally to the show's success as a performer.
