Hot Young Love in a Frozen World
Black Ice On Stage at the Concert Chamber from February 11
Black Ice, a cool new love story developed in partnership by Pandemonium Theatre and THE EDGE® Public Programmes will premiere at the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE® at 8pm Saturday, February 11 and run for six performances.
Featuring a cast of hot young actors, dynamic physical performances and inventive illusion, Black Ice is a powerful mix of classic folktale and raging hormones that promises to take audiences into a chilling world of beauty, magic and suspense.
Black Ice is set in contrasting worlds: an isolated and forgotten village and an ethereal land of ice. A pair of mismatched young lovers is thrown out of town only to land in the ice kingdom – a place of treachery, stampeding beasts, magic and passion.
Directed by Pandemonium’s Lynne Cardy, Margaret-Mary Hollins and Kate Parker, it features a design by John Verryt, lighting by Andrew Malmo and musical direction by Louise Britzman.
Pandemonium Theatre is excited to be premiering this fresh new work following the success of their highly acclaimed productions, The Butcher’s Daughter, Macbeth and Beautiful Losers.
"Black Ice draws together talented young players and seasoned practitioners to create a memorable and powerful story," said Margaret-Mary Hollins. “A theatrical journey into the treacherous unknown, Black Ice is physical, visual and full of surprises. No lions, witches, or wardrobes – just hot young love in a frozen world. It is a theatrical experience that will take any frozen heart, blast it with pure heat and thaw the soul," she added.
Black Ice is the product of a highly successful partnership between THE EDGE® and Pandemonium and has been developed out of the work the two organisations have been doing together in Auckland secondary schools over a number of years.
“We started talking in 2004 about creating a new physical theatre piece with a young company,” said THE EDGE® Public Programmes Manager Sally Markham. “A group of about 20 devised the story over a twelve-month period and then auditions were held. This long developmental process has meant that at each stage the work has been presented to an invited audience, and their feedback has informed its growth. Our partnership has provided the young company with a superb mentoring process to create work of excellence. It is fantastic to see it come to fruition,” she said.
Black Ice will be on stage at the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE® from February 11 – 18. 8pm Tuesday – Saturday, 6pm Sunday. Tickets are $12 and $22 and are now on sale at Ticketek: www.ticketek.co.nz or (09) 307 5000.
