Good Bastards Announce “Politically Incorrect Weekend”
What has become a West Coast tradition for some and also many from further afield is about to get a massive face lift.
Good Bastards Day has been held on Melbourne Cup Day at the Southland Hotel Hokitika for over ten years. (No ones quite
sure what year it first kicked off).
This year it’s all changing: Good Bastards Day will become “Good Bastards Politically Incorrect Weekend” and be held on
the first weekend of November.
This year it will be the third fourth and fifth of November.
“Good Bastards Day usually tries to put on a better day than the year before” said Paddy Sweeney from Good Bastards HQ
on the Gold Coast.
“We have for a while been nourishing ideas of how to turn it into a festival and the ingredients have now all fallen
into place.”
The event will still have its dunny cart racing, plus there is a car race, a nude race and other larrikin events as
well. There will be a Good Bastard Bushman contest.
Sweeney was tight lipped about what these events would entail.
“We are also holding the “Good Bastards Rugby World Cup” that weekend.” He said.
“We have held that three times in Christchurch and its all worked very well. It came about when the previous Rugby
administrators’ buggared up the co-hosting of the World Cup so we decided that we’d have one anyway. With that a cup was
bought, that is actually bigger than the Rugby World Cup and tournaments being run. That was about four years ago.”
“So far we have 3 teams that have indicated their willingness to travel to the west Coast event and we haven’t even
waved our flag.” Said Neil Blanchfield, president of the Good Bastards Rugby Club. “We expect the event to grow over the
next few years to see twenty plus over 35 teams traveling to the Coast.”
Golf, quad bikes and other events are also on the Good Bastards agenda.
“We are going to make it quite a festival with a Whitebaiters Ball, eventually a parade through the streets and much
more.” Sweeney said. “A number of entertainers will be involved and while we expect it to start off as a modest
undertaking, as it gains popularity with the sheer worth of it all, it could potentially grow into an iconic experience
and be a great promotion for the West Coast.”
“One of the yet to be announced major sponsors will be paying for a full time co-coordinator to bring together all the
Good Bastards events that are held in Australia and New Zealand.” Sweeney said. “That will be an immense help in
bringing together, this and many other things we do and have planned.
The whole idea will have an undercurrent to stick it up the politically correct mob and the do gooders that do very
little good in their quest of purism.
“Look if you can’t have a bloody good laugh at least twenty times a day, your pretty much buggared, and these do gooders
and politically correct bastards give as all so much to laugh about.”
