Acapella duos needed for new Pasifika Festival competition
Auckland City is calling for singers to tune up their voices and enter the Pasifika Harmonies competition. This new addition to the 2006 Pasifika Festival programme consists of a variety of duos singing acapella (without instrumental accompaniment).
Auditions will be held on Friday 10 February and Thursday 16 February, and the finalists will compete on the Air New Zealand Contemporary Stage at Pasifika Festival from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 11 March.
Thanks to Air New Zealand, the winners of the competition will receive a return trip for two to one of any Pacific destinations that the airline flys to (terms and conditions apply).
All entries must be two singers only, with no accompaniment.
Pasifika Festival entertainment director, Rick Tuiasau, says the competition is a great way to scout for talent.
"I was really impressed at the level of talent at the Expressions Pasifika auditions last November and the passion and drive of those entrants who want to break into the music scene.
"I will be looking for the same sort of qualities in these auditions - not just duos who can sing but the whole package - smooth and well-rehearsed, hardworking, keen, professional, and a great stage presence which engages the crowd.
"I want these guys to earn the right to perform on Festival Day. When you get 210,000 people to the festival like we did last year, it's the perfect launching pad for new talent," says Mr Tuiasau.
For more details about Pasifika Harmonies or to make an appointment for an audition please contact Rick Tuiasau on (09) 353 9533 or rick.tuiasau@aucklandcity.govt.nz .
Pasifika Festival 2006 will be held at Western Springs stadium and lakeside on 10 and 11 March. It starts on Friday with the spectacular free Air New Zealand opening night concert at the stadium, and concludes on Saturday with a full day of performances, entertainment and festivities.
Pasifika Festival is one of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City as part of the Ak@Play summer events programme. It is proudly sponsored by Air New Zealand, Radio 531pi, SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand), The New Zealand Herald, Flava 96one, APRA and the NZ Music Industry Commission, and Western Union Money Transfer. The festival is supported by Fonterra Brands (Tip Top) Limited, McCallum Industries Palm Corned Beef and Spasifik Magazine, and funded by the Pacific Arts Committee of Creative New Zealand.
