Whirimako Black was awarded the NZ Order Of Merit in the New Years Honours List for services to Maori music. She is
currently working on a new album of 40’s and 50’s standards performed in te reo, featuring classic songs such as Cry Me
a River, Summertime and Autumn Leaves. Musical director is guitarist Joel Haines, whose performances will also grace the
album.
Katchafire head to Hawaii in mid February to support the initial success at radio of Who You With. They’re playing 4
gigs at 2000 - 10,000 seat venues with reggae star Don Carlos and several local acts, then heading to the US mainland
for 2or 3 shows. Mai Music is seeking to have a distribution deal in place in time for the tour, which will allow access
to the chain stores like K-Mart and Best Buy, which play a large part in the mass market there.
Savage’s single ‘Moonshine’ (featuring Akon) has gone Gold in Australia (marking 35,000 sales). ‘Moonshine’ is the most
successful single in DawnRaid’s history, having accumulated double platinum sales in NZ after 7 weeks at #1 on the NZ
chart, and it is also Dawn Raid Entertainment’s first Gold single in Australia; currently sitting at #10 on the ARIA
chart after 10 weeks.
In live news, Gahu are opening for the James Brown show on 10th February at Auckland’s Civic. The new Brunettes lineup
has been playing in Australia and includes Sjionel from the Coolies on bass and US-based kiwi Will Cotton on sax.
From February 13 if you are in Australia you will also be able to purchase New Way Home’s debut EP ‘Anomaly’ (Midium)
thanks to Australia’s Inertia distribution. Following the release, they will be playing some shows throughout March in
Melbourne and Sydney.
Ryan McPhun and the Ruby Suns were surprised to find that they were being lauded as far afield as Washington, where the
Washington City Paper picked their album as one of the best of last year. And Ed Cake's album ‘Downtown Puff’ was chosen
as one of the top five albums of 2005 by UK band The Clientele.
Joining the Intergalactic roster are all girl Vegas rockers Jaggedy Ann, who are coming to NZ to record their debut
album with AC/DC drummer and NZ resident, Phil Rudd, producing.
Nik Carlson's debut single I Believe In A Thing Called Love is out now via Jayrem Records.
If you’re wondering why his name is familiar, Nik was placed second in New Zealand Idol 2005.
On February 28th Breakin Wreckwordz are releasing the debut album ‘Wasted Youth’ from MC and hip hop enthusiast Louie
Knuxx. He’s joined on the album by fellow Breakin’ Wreckwordz artists such as Cyphanetik, Tourettes, Usual Suspects as
well as the likes of Con Psy (Frontline), PNC and Maia.
Kog offshoot Propaganda Management & Promotions are to release the debut EP from funk/soul/electronic act Numotion Ensemble early this year. Powertool
Records are releasing the Puddle’s long-lost album 'Songs for Emily Valentine' this month.
In news from Monkey Records, Onelung's new album 'Binary Pop Songs' will be released in March next year, as will Ishta's
debut album. Jo Contag aka Sleepytime/Cloudboy is back from Berlin and we will be re-releasing ‘Sleepytime II:
Schlafwandler’ with his latest work ‘Sleepytime III: The Twilight Drone’ as a special bonus disc. Monkey have also
recently licensed the Onelung track The Royal Loop to French Label Divibes for a compilation.
The video release for the new Gramsci single Code coincided with the band's debut Big Day Out performance. The video is
directed by award-winning director Ed Davis, who won the Kodak Music Clip Awards' Best Director prize in July this year
for the Exiles' Hear The People, as well as the 2005 Handle the Jandal Rising Star award for the Misfits of Science
Fools Love Ragga Remix clip. He was also a finalist in the SPADA New Film-maker Awards.
Wellinton’s OdESSA have won the 2006 Jack Daniels/Amplifier 'Live And Local' competition for a New Zealand band to play
at Big Day Out and record at York Street Studios.
