Things You Need to Know About Big Day Out
This morning we asked Big Day out promoter Campbell Smith to describe the Big Day Out in six words or less.
“Enormous band slide sun slurp bus frenzy,” he said, making clear his inability to count.
But it is important to remember the message that Campbell is trying to convey. The Big Day Out is a huge event. It is
crowded with thousands of people on a serious musical party mission. To make the most of the event, it is important to
remember a few of Campbell’s good rules.
“Get your outfit ready before the day,” he says. “Because who wants to be throwing on clothes and trying to match
accessories when you should be running for the bus to get to the moshpit on time?”
In fact, accessories are no good at all in the moshpit and we should also point out that studded belts, studded
wristbands and other spiky jewellery will all be confiscated at the gate. Sorry about that but them’s the rules and we
want everyone to be safe as well as extremely good-looking.
We will also have to take big professional cameras with zoom lens bits off you at the gate too (but these will be
returned at the end) so please don’t bring them along.
There’s no public parking at Ericsson or on the streets immediately around the stadium so we recommend public transport
using the special bus and train services on the day rather than bringing your car. The best way to get out to Ericsson
on Friday morning is by bus from Real Groovy or on the train. Full public transport details are below.
Once inside the Big Day Out you will need a few things:
- a cellphone to text everyone and hold up in the air so that your mum can hear the Stooges playing ‘I Wanna Be Your
Dog’ because she had to stay home and cook for your baby brother
- ID if you are old enough to drink and want to get into the bar areas
- sunblock
- something warm to wear later, it does get cold at night
- eftpos card or cash to buy stuff
- stilettos, just kidding. Jandals, just kidding. You know what shoes are right for you but we recommend Cons and not
just because they’re a sponsor
- you can also bring a sealed bottle of non-alcoholic beverage onto the site, we’re not Rhythm and Vines. We recommend
H2GO and V (cos they’re cool dudes and loaned us a dangermouse scooter not just cos they’re sponsors) but there are no
rules about it
- a designated time and place to meet up with your mates later on once you’ve all been on your own little adventures
A couple of other things to remember… There is a coat and bag check on site, use that for your stuff so you are free to
wave your arms wildly dancing in the Boiler Room.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFORMATION:
BDO recommends you take public transport to the Big Day Out.
BUS: The BDO Bus is a continuous service departing Real Groovy Records from 9.15am through 2.00pm. A return service
commences from 9.30pm from Gate B. This service runs until everyone has gone home and runs directly to The St James
Theatre. Cost is $5.00 each way - tickets available on the day from the fat controller.
TRAIN: This year the trains run on the southern, eastern and western lines. The Southern service will start from
Papakura and run directly to Penrose Station. The Western service starts at Waitakere Station. The Eastern service will
cover Glen Innes, Meadowbank, Panmure and Orakei. A return service will commence at 9.30pm and run both South and West
with the last train departing Penrose at 12.30am.
