There'll be swingin', swayin' and records playin'
P-Money, Ladi6, Pluto, Concord Dawn, Baitercell and Bex Riley, Havoc and Nick D are just some of the headline acts playing for free on Auckland's CBD streets this summer, thanks to Auckland City's Dancing in the Street series.
Dancing in the Street is a celebration of New Zealand music for all ages, featuring the cream of Auckland's finest DJs and bands.
The programme of free street parties, a component of Auckland City's Music in Parks series, are held once a month from January through March on Friday evenings (8pm to midnight). The events are held just in front of the Auckland Public Library in Lorne Street which is specially closed to traffic.
This year the series will be hosted by Nick D, 95bFM's long-time boy wonder and host of C4's specialist dance and electronica show 'Soundlab'. Nick D is also a successful drum 'n' bass DJ, popping up in clubs all over the world.
The first street party kicks off on Friday 27 January with some serious rock 'n' roll sounds from Pluto, fuzzy guitar rock from Bored Gordon, a scoop of post-punk goodness from The Vacants, and some barbershop-garage-psychedelic-blues-surf-jazz-devonport-core from SmokeFree RockQuest winners The Electric Confectionaires.
Dancing in the Street #2 on 17 February features premiere drum 'n' bass duo Concord Dawn, electronic dance music wizard Baitercell with vocalist Bex Riley, and 95bFM DJs Havoc and Nick D.
If you missed out on U2 tickets for 17 March, get yourself down to the final street party that night because there won't be many other free opportunities to see multi New Zealand Music Award winner P-Money doing some wicked scratchin'. Also performing are rap/hip hop duo Frontline, top vocalist and MC Ladi6, hip hop crew PNC, and 95bFM's DJs D-Form and Mouli spinning up a storm to produce some high-voltage dance floor anthems.
The Dancing in the Street series is produced by Auckland City, with support from 95bFM. They are just one of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City as part of the Ak@Play summer events programme. Check www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips or listen to 95bFM for more details.
