Kai Time on air for Christmas
One of New Zealand’s favourite programmes is back on air tonight.
So switch on to Maori Television to catch the latest series of Kai Time On The Road and the only the only celebrity chef
tough enough to hunt his own food - and follow it up with the creation of some awesome kai.
It’s one of the spiciest programmes on air and something hugely unique to New Zealand.
Bay of Plenty’s Peter Peeti says the hunting and gathering is an essential ingredient in his role fronting the popular
Kai Time On-The-Road.
While some television viewers may dub the man staunch, Peeti loves his role as hunter and celebrity chef.
And he is hoping viewers will equally enjoy the new series in weeks to come with the mix of inventive, curious and
downright delicious kai, complete with lashings of true Maori flair.
Though it kicks off tonight, the series will take a short break for the KAI TIME ON THE ROAD CHRISTMAS SPECIAL screening
Thursday, December 22 from 8.00-8.30pm.
Peeti and co-host Kingi Biddle will catch up with whanau and friends from past shows during a three-course Christmas
hakari (feast). They’ll be joined by Mahia’s Derek Fox, Bill Tawhai of Te Kaha, Hohepa Epiha from Matauri Bay and Piki
Thomas of the New Zealand Fire Service.
Peeti (Ngati Pikiao, Te Atihaunuia a Paparangi) rides alongside Biddle (Te Arawa and Mataatua), a man with an unrivalled
love of kai and katakata, trapsing the Coromandel, East Coast and Bay of Plenty in search of more fantastic recipes.
Peeti says the Christmas special has been a blast to film.
It will highlight the countless good old times the Kai Time team have had throughout their journeys around Aotearoa. It
will also feature past and present presenters as they commemorate the aroha and efforts friends and whanau around the
motu have gifted along the way.
He says it is quite a departure from his TV role but says gathering and cooking food is his specialty.
“My hunting days stretch back to a childhood hunting and fishing around Rotoiti, but I always harboured dreams of
becoming a chef and did just that thanks to the training ground at Waiariki Institute of Technology.”
The man is even becoming famous in print media thanks to fronting the cover of this months Mana Magazine! And away from
the screen you’ll find him whipping up a storm as the Executive Chef in one of Rotorua’s popular Freos cafe.
As for Peeti’s Christmas message: “Kia Pai te kai, Buon Appetito, Mauri Ora.”
*Peeti and the Kai Time team have just completed their 100th episode with the help of Rotorua production company, Maui
Productions. The show first screened on TVNZ’s Marae has been running for more than five years now.
