Gillette Cup Elite Squad Announced
The top 12 performers from the weekend’s Gillette Cup National secondary schools cricket finals’ tournament in Palmerston North have been rewarded with inclusion in an elite coaching clinic to be held in Wellington in February. NZ Cricket announced the squad at the Gillette Cup awards dinner last night.
The squad is:
Chris Bond Howick College
Greg Morgan Howick College
Tom Powell Howick College
Robert Lucas Tauranga Boys College
Steven Rae Tauranga Boys College
Mathew Sadd Tauranga Boys College
Kane Williamson Tauranga Boys College
Douglas Bracewell Rathkeale College
Andrew Dodd Rathkeale College
Phillip Banks Christchurch Boys’ High School
Andrew Horrell Christchurch Boys’ High School
Henry Nuttall Christchurch Boys’ High School
New Zealand Cricket Development Manager, Alec Astle, said disruptive weather made it difficult to choose the squad.
“The weather didn’t do us any favours over the weekend with only two of the six scheduled games being completed,” said Astle. “However, all the boys who have made the Gillette Cup Elite Squad are talented cricketers and fully deserve their place. We feel that the boys will gain a lot from being coached in a professional first-class environment. They will also gain a few tips and pointers from the Black Caps players who will be assisting the clinic.
“I think that some of the boys have the potential to go a very long way in the game of Cricket.”
The squad will attend the Gillette Cup Elite Coaching Clinic in Wellington on February 10th 2006. Gillette will cover the travel costs of the 12 players.
