Black Barn OpenAir Cinema 2006 - A Festival of Film under the Stars
Following last year's inaugural success, Havelock North entrepreneurial film lovers, Doris and Urs Blum have prepared a
cinematic smorgasbord for their second season, opening at the Black Barn Amphitheatre on January 24th.
This year they're inviting guests to pick and choose from twelve films, each carefully chosen to tantalize and delight
in the open air under the stars. >From the Hawke's Bay Premiere of '3-Iron', a beautiful romantic drama exploring
destiny and diversity from Korean director Kim Ki-duk, to a big wave roller-coaster romp through the history of surfing,
'Riding Giants', there's plenty of variety to more than satisfy a broad range of film appetites.
Urs says last year it was a real pleasure to see the numbers of people coming along in groups: "friends getting together
at the end of a wonderful Hawke's Bay summer's day with a picnic basket and a bottle of fine wine. They'd spread the
rugs, lean back on their cushions to sip and sup under the sun, and later the stars, in front of the big screen. It was
magical combination: friends, film, food, wine, and the marvelous amphitheatre ambience, so much so we decided to do it
again", he says.
The season runs from January 24th to February 4th, the opening day of Harvest Hawke's Bay Weekend.
Amongst the other films screening are: 'The Triplets of Belleville', a hilarious and astonishing animated cartoon with a
superb jazz soundtrack, New Zealand's award winning 'In My Father's Den', and the riveting dance/music documentary
'Rize', celebrating the Los Angeles world of 'clowning' and 'krumping' - also described as 'ghetto ballet' (a physically
astounding and spectacular hybrid of hip-hop, break dance and clowning).
