Veteran Jamaican roots reggae band Third World have been confirmed for the SoundSplash 2006 festival to be held in Raglan in February. Event organisers Motherland Collective revealed this week that the band, one of the most popular International reggae bands of the last 30 years, will perform in New Zealand for the very first time, joining other International reggae legends Big Youth and DJ Earl Gateshead (Trojan Soundsystem).
Third World premiered in Kingston in 1974, and within months, they were performing alongside acts such as Bob Marley & the Wailers and the Jackson Five. In 1986, the band received the ‘United Nations Peace Medal’, and in the following years, a host of Jamaican music awards and Grammy nominations.
Third World boasts a quarter-century of smash hit songs, sold-out tours and inspirational messages. International hit songs include Now That We've Found Love, 96 Degrees in the Shade, Try Jah Love (written by Stevie Wonder), Sense of Purpose, Forbidden Love, Reggae Ambassador, and Reggae Party.
As Third World says, “If its music, sweet music, let it play”.
