Maori Television urban music series COAST pays special tribute to legendary home-grown reggae band Herbs on Thursday
October 27 at 9.00 PM.
A bastion of live music on New Zealand television, COAST is dedicated to showcasing a diverse range of studio
performances, field reports, interviews and artist profiles over an exhilarating 1.5 hours.
Herbs is one of this country’s top reggae bands with a history that goes back to the late 1970s and has supported
international acts such as UB40, Tina Turner, Neil Young and Stevie Wonder.
Hit tunes include the protest song against French nuclear testing in the Pacific, French Letter, and a collaboration
with Dave Dobbyn, Slice of Heaven, as well as partnerships with Tim Finn on the song Parihaka and Annie Crummer with See
What Love Can Do.
The COAST tribute will include guest appearances by the only two original members in the current line-up, Dilworth
Karaka and Tama Lundon, performing as Herbs unplugged. Local musicians – including Ladi 6 and Open Souls – will also
perform other classic tracks from the Herbs catalogue.
Producer Jo Tuapawa says it’s not hard to see why the band have managed to consistently pull out the hits over the years
given their trademark reggae and funk groove coupled with excellent musicianship and song-writing.
“Herbs is a New Zealand institution and their music still remains true to the reggae tradition addressing important
social and political issues.”
Cruise down to Maori Television at 9-15 Davis Crescent, Newmarket, for the live broadcast presented by Brent Mio and
Kara Rickard from the purpose-built state-of-the-art studio.
