The Da Vinci Machines
18 November - 5 March
Inventor - Artist - Genius
The scientific innovation of Leonardo da Vinci will soon be on show at an exhibition of over 50 recreated models of da
Vinci's famous machines including his designs for a bicycle, glider, tank, paddle-boat and much more. Each model has
been built according to Leonardo's drawings and notes and with materials available in fifteenth-century Italy.
Don't miss the chance to get hands on with some of the da Vinci innovations designed over 500 years ago.

Zambesi: edge of darkness
Tuesday 11 October 7.30pm
'New Zealand Fashion Take on the World'. Professor Maureen Molloy will look at understanding the success of New Zealand
Fashion in a global context. How was it that New Zealand had turned from a sartorial wasteland to the darling of the
fashion commentators almost instantaneously? In association with the Auckland Museum Institute. $5 entry, Members FREE.
The Zambesi: edge of darkness exhibition celebrates twenty five years of the iconic New Zealand fashion label. Regarded
as 'edgy and darkly intelligent', Elisabeth Findlay's designs surprise and achieve a level of emotional resonance rare
in comtemporary fashion. The exhibition will be open prior to the lecture.
_The ever-changing Museum
City Gallery
Until 30 October 2005
The popular City Gallery on the ground floor is due for closure at the end of October. Don't miss the chance to take in
our urban cultural heritage spanning the best part of the twentieth century before it closes. An exciting new decorative
arts exhibition will be opening in this space in July 2006.
The incoming exhibition will feature New Zealand Applied Arts (furniture, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, glass,
jewellery) from earliest European settlement through to today. A further International Applied Arts gallery will open at
the same time on the opposite side of the Museum and will present snap shots of style from the Middle Ages right through
to the Twentieth Century.
A new exhibition, featuring the City of Auckland, will reopen on the ground floor in 2007
Museum Library
Still Simmering - Cookbook Time Capsules
Until 28 November
Like diaries, letters and other domestic artefacts, cookbooks offer special insight into the prevailing values and
cultural forces in society. For a glimpse of food, domesticity and gender in 20th century New Zealand, enjoy a selection
of reproductions in the Library foyer and cookbooks on display in the Library Reading Room.

Behind the Scenes Open Day
Sunday, 6 November
Auckland Museum will once again open its doors to the public for a special viewing of the behind-the-scenes workings of
this very popular Auckland icon.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience what's behind the closed doors of the Museum. Highlights include; the
many metres of special books and reference material we hold in the Library store; the construction site to view the
atrium space before it's closed in; and a special peek at the Collections storage space some nine metres below the
ground. There'll be plenty to keep the kids entertained; treasure trail, luck dips, prizes and more. Adults $10,
Children FREE. 10am - 5pm.
A marquee, sausage sizzle, star appearance by Delaurus, the Museum dryosaur, and other special guest appearances will
make this a great entertaining day out.

Lecture
Dance and Politics in South Korea: Not Such Strange Bed-fellows
Monday, 7 November, 3pm - 4pm
Following a brief illustrated introduction to the many forms of dance in Korea today, Professor Van Zile examines a
variety of ways in which dance and politics intersect in South Korea. She points to such things as political statements
made in masked dance-dramas in the past as well as today, and the government's formalized system for recognizing people
and dances as National Treasures. $5 entry, Members FREE. APEC Room, Auckland Museum.
Co-sponsors of the event are Asia: NZ Foundation, The Korea Study Centre, New Zealand Asian Institute of the University
of Auckland.

Armistice Day Commemorations
Friday 11 November
Please join Auckland War Memorial Museum, the RSA and the joint forces in commemorating one of the most significant days
in the history of conflict. Armistice Day marks the anniversary of the ceasefire that ended the First World War and
commemorates the sacrifice of those who died serving New Zealand in this and all subsequent wars and armed conflict.
We will also take this opportunity to remember our comrades in other parts of the world, especially our personnel
currently serving in the various operational missions. The ceremony will be held in the Auckland War Memorial Museum
World War I Hall of Memories at 10.30am. Contact Amanda Sutherland for more information.

Afghanistan: a Peacekeeper's perspective A compelling photographic exhibition of the peacekeeping context in Afghanistan
tdoay. Personal, ground level, eye witness accounts of the impact peacekeeping has in this turbulent theatre.

Takapau Will Travel A touring exhibition of new work that continues with themes of botanical colonisation, cataloguing
and collecting as part of a jewellery cameo series.
16 December - 15 January
Colours of New Zealand Auckland Museum photographer Krzysztof Pfeiffer’s acclaimed exhibition of stunning landscape
portraiture returns from Poland.
Opening 17 December
Volcanoes The Museum's newest permanent exhibiton. An up close and personal examination of the scientific and human
stories of volcanoes. The highly interactive exhibition will also give visitors a walk through deep sea black smokers
and also a domestic view of a volcanic eruption in Auckland - the only city in the world actually built on an active
volcanic field!
