Top Christchurch Trainer Selected for $20,000 SHOOTOUT
Greyhound Racing New Zealand today announced the selection of Christchurch-based trainers, Dave and Jean Fahey and their
dog, Willy What, to compete for the $20,000, winner-takes-all prize at the Oxy-shot NZ Shootout. Mr and Mrs Fahey will
be up against two other top trainers from Huntly and Cambridge in the four-dog race in Auckland on 7 October 2005.
Lance Bickford, Chief Executive, Greyhound Racing New Zealand said the Oxy-Shot NZ Shootout, launched last year, will
see the leading greyhound trainers in the country and their top dogs face-off in what is expected to be a very intense
race.
"There is a strong rivalry between the top trainers and many in the industry view this as a bit of a grudge match
between the trainers from different regions throughout New Zealand," said Mr Bickford.
"The Shootout race is always intense and entertaining. It's important for people to remember that greyhound racing isn't
only for those who are familiar with the racing aspect of the sport - it's also for those who want a great night out and
who want to experience something new," he said.
Racing writer, Peter Fenemore said that Willy What, who was 'crowned' Greyhound of the Year last month, ran a 30.16
second race at his last appearance in Auckland - just outside the 527 metre track record and a repeat performance will
see him win the $20,000 prize.
The Oxy-shot NZ Shootout will be held at 8:30pm at the Auckland Greyhound Racing Club, Manukau Stadium, Te Irirangi
Drive, Manukau on Friday 7 October 2005. Racing starts at 5.30pm with entry free to the public.
