Radio Active Handle the Jandal DIY NZ Music Video Competition 2005 WINNERS
Radio Active 89FM launched the awards, honouring our most innovative, inspired and truly magical independent music videos, six years ago. At that time, there were few public screening opportunities for the underdog, independent music video. Today, local television and the film industry have embraced homegrown music videos and a Golden Jandal is a golden calling card for emerging directors.
Due to this years high standard of entrants, some heavy weight judges was brought in to make sure that judging results had credibility.
Established film and award winning music video maker Chris Graham, has a reputation for being a visual director with an ability to find the essence within poetic images. As one of the judges for the Editing & Rising Star sections of Handle the Jandal 05 he says:
“us judges were amazed at the heavy volume of the range of animation (out of 15 there were 11 animated vids), but every year the standard and technique rises and there seems to be a new wave of video makers that should make good videos for good music for years to come”
Gemma Gracewood, the producer of the art programme ‘Frontseat’ also lends her expertise on the judging panel to pick the best use of exploitative tactics & Animation. Her thoughts on the entrants:
“A couple of the clips in particular show the nutty sense of humour that’s been around in local music videos since the early days of Flying Nun. In the animated section it’s great to see people totally geeking out – you can tell there’s been far too much time spent at home in front of a computer, which can’t be a bad thing if it produces the likes of the Misfits of Science video.
It’s also a relief to see some folks are still engaging with cameras and crews to get some stunning live action footage, like the Fly My Pretties flick. And there can never be anything bad about following Video Kid’s booty-shakin’ ass around Europe either. Coincidentally, Raw Sugar nicely echoed this booty-shakin’ vibe in cartoon form.”
And always a great judge on any prestigious occasion is the unforgettable, talented Mr Taika Waititi. He has long been one of the country's most promising and well respected actors in theatre and film. A man of few words imparts his perspective on the cinematography & concept of this years winners:
“Much better than the usual shit you see”
