Spirit of Terracotta Warriors on Stage in Auckland
Chinese classical dance and contemporary New Zealand dance combine in a unique production being staged in Auckland in October.
Chinasty Art and Performance (NZ) presents The Spirit of Terracotta Warriors: A Collection of Chinese Classical Dance at SKYCITY Theatre, Auckland on October 20 and 21.
The Spirit of Terracotta Warriors: A Collection of Chinese Classical Dance is the first major production mounted by Chinasty Art and Performance and features traditional Chinese dance, Chinese folk dance and contemporary dance.
Chinasty dancers will perform the Chinese dance segment of the programme which features internationally renowned classical works including The Spirit of Terracotta Warriors and Tunhuang Dance. Third year dance students from Unitec’s School of Performing Arts will perform dance works from their repertoire. The show will end with all dancers performing the Chinese classical piece Yellow River.
Chinasty director Amanda Wang says the production aims to showcase classical Chinese dance and act as an exchange between Chinese and New Zealand dancers.
“When people think of Chinese dance, they think of the fan dance, but there are so many other forms of Chinese dance.“
Amanda adds that she is also hoping to bring a guest dancer from China to perform at the show.
Chinasty was formed by Amanda two years ago and currently has 17 dancers who focus on traditional Chinese dance. The group has performed at a range of events including Chinese New Year celebrations and at AK05.
The Spirit of Terracotta Warriors: A Collection of Chinese Classical Dance at SKYCITY Theatre, Auckland on October 20 and 21 at 8pm. Tickets are available from Ticketek.
