A LETHAL SET presents THE RETURN
STOP THE TRAIN – I WANT TO GET OFF!
Late on a stifling hot night, the close confines of a suburban train become a claustrophobic and bitter psychological battleground in Reg Cribb’s award winning play THE RETURN.
The New Zealand premiere of THE RETURN directed by Heath Jones, (The Boys in the Band, The Glass Menagerie, Proof) provides an amazing showcase for the exceptional acting talents of EMMELINE HAWTHORNE (Shortland Street, Xena), BEN BARRINGTON (Insiders Guide to Happiness), GARETH REEVES (Caligula, Insiders Guide to Love), MICHELE HINE, and FRASER BROWN (Shortland Street, Insiders Guide to Happiness).
When Lisa, a beautiful young woman, gets on the train, two social misfits vie for her attention, through various boisterous antics, which while comical are still somehow disturbing. The journey rides the uneasy line between comedy and terror as the two thugs turn on the handful of commuters.
“This is outstanding, compelling, riveting, raw-nerved theatre that leaves the audience nowhere to hide. This is a story that we all must see, if you only take one theatre ride this year, make it a Return journey.” - Weekly Times Messenger, March 2003
The pressure cooker situation threatens to explode as they near their destination, but by the journey’s end the line between aggressor and victim has become blurred. Just who is terrorising whom?
“Gripping, funny, and above all entertaining, this is Fringe Theatre worth going station to station for. No wonder it is called The Return: you’ll want to go back again and again. 5 Stars!” - Edinburgh Evening News, August 2003
Directed by Heath Jones, who’s most recent theatre performances were in Shakespeare’s Shorts and the acclaimed French Toast, he also featured in the recent sell-out season of the SiLO Theatre’s production of The Boys In the Band. Heath has trained extensively with Raymond Hawthorne, Elizabeth Hawthorne and Linda Cartwright.
“...an atmosphere full of danger and suspense; the audience is kept on
the edge of their seats throughout, wondering when the tension is going to reach breaking point.” - Three Weeks Magazine, August 2003
