Cats NHL Programme Commences
The Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats get their Lion Foundation National Hockey League campaign underway this weekend with
games against Midland and North Harbour. Games will be played in Auckland on the Saturday and Albany on the Sunday.
The women’s competition is starting a week earlier than the men’s because some teams will lose players in October
representing New Zealand in the Indira Gandhi Tournament in India.
The Cats had a good shake down on Wednesday this week when they played the Australian U21 team at Porritt Park. They
lost 1 – 2 but coach Paul Derham said “it was good to have tough competition so close to the start of the Lion
Foundation National Hockey League.”
Derham said “the Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats are looking forward to the start of the League and I will be looking
for the team to build on Wednesday’s experience.”
Derham is not taking either game lightly particularly North Harbour who have world class defender Lizzie Igasan and
Black Sticks striker Jamie Provan playing up front. He will be starting with his number one team in both games.
Expect to see Stacey Carr, who showed outstanding form against the Australians earlier in the week, leading the way.
Newly selected Black Stick Bridget Kight who has been stoic in defence throughout the Australian series will be looking
to carry that game forward as will the other Black Sticks, Meredith Orr, Jane Maley, Jo Galletly, Honor Dillon and
teenager
Clarissa Eshuis.
