The West Goes Wild Over A Decade Of Utter Trash
TRASH TO FASHION® is proud to celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a theme that pays homage to classic Kiwi styles.
Over the last ten years New Zealanders have credited TRASH TO FASHION® for championing the spirit of kiwi ingenuity. From the humblest of beginnings this annual event now attracts thousands of participants from all over New Zealand. With the receipt of over 400 registrations, and an expected audience of 9000, the 2006 showcase is set to become the finest in its ten year history.
The mighty Trusts Stadium opens its doors for the second year running to the diverse and growing audience, who are drawn to an event famed for large-scale theatricality and breath-taking spectacle. The catwalk is trashed with stunning and highly inventive costumes created out of recycled, inorganic and organic materials. These extraordinary garments bring together the varying talents of emerging, established, novice and young designers. Whilst created in the spirit of fun these creations carry with them an important social message. To recycle, reuse and ultimately reduce waste.
A large cast of forty professional actors, models and performance artists build a high energy show around the dramatic personalities offered by these creations. This year the ensemble is joined by an exciting new element. TRASH TO FASHION® has created nine short films themed by the entry categories and their distinctive kiwi flair. Audiences will be surprised and entertained by cameos from well-known New Zealand personalities whose identities will be revealed on the night in these short vignettes which link the showcase.
Waitakere City Council, Keep Waitakere Beautiful and the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts are delighted to confirm this year’s iconic kiwi categories. These are - GOODYGOODY GUMDROPS (primary and intermediate students ), SWEET AS (Secondary school students ) , A GOOD KEEN MAN (Menswear - kiwibloke style), DOWN TO EARTH (100% biodegradable), LADIES A PLATE AND THE ALL BLACK SECTION (glamour section), IT’S IN THE BAG (Retro street), NUMBER 8 WIRE(industrial and inorganic ) and TIKI TOUR ( ethnic and cultural).
TRASH TO FASHION® has an exceptional team working on the 2006 performance. Creative director – Carla Martell returns for her sixth year in this highly sought after role. Carla is well known to the arts community as a choreographer and director, working with many companies including Opera NZ and Massive Company. She is joined by a professional team of designers, film makers and production crew who aim to make the 10th anniversary a great success. The search for the large, multi-skilled cast has just begun. The full ensemble is hoped to be confirmed by the end of September.
