DOWSE CLOSING DATE : 4 SEPTEMBER 2005
The Dowse will close its doors on September 4, 2005, for a major building redevelopment. Athfield Architects' stunning
design for the 'new' Dowse includes 60% more gallery space, multipurpose indoor and outdoor facilities, a spectacular
garden cafe and gallery store - watch this space for updates & new images of the building facade and interior spaces!
During this period of closure The Dowse will continue to tour its most popular exhibitions to other venues nationally,
programme off-site exhibitions in Wellington and profile items from its collection online at www.dowse.org.nz. The first
off-site exhibition is scheduled for the NZ International Festival of the Arts in February 2006...

DOWSE WISH TREE [AUGUST 27 > SEPT 4]
GIVE US A MEMORY & MAKE A WISH!
A wonderful rambling Dowse Wish Tree will be painted on the wall of the gallery in the final week before the building
finally closes for redevelopment.
This is an opportunity for the Dowse's large extended family (visitors, artists and makers, local residents and staff)
to look back and celebrate over three decades of extraordinary exhibitions and events. Visitors will be able to record
their favourite Dowse experiences, make a wish for the new Dowse and hang it on the tree.

A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS... [ON NOW > SEPTEMBER 4]
LOOK! We've pulled out some of our most popular all-time favourite works for this final celebratory exhibition (before
packing them away into storage for the building redevelopment on September 4) A Few of Our Favourite Things is a
celebration of The Dowse's extraordinary permanent collection of decorative arts, craft and design in New Zealand. It
encompasses over 20 large sculptural and mixed-media installation works, which are in turn bold, contemplative,
humorous, quirky and full of surprises - a true celebration of the Dowse character. More

THE DOWSE LIGHTSTONES : JOHN EDGAR [AUGUST 26 > SEPTEMBER 4]
A Few of Our Favourite Things will also include the work of leading New Zealand artist (and Dowse stalwart!) John
Edgar. Commissioned by The Dowse Foundation, Edgar has made 30 new works from stones collected from the Pencarrow area.
These beautifully 'altered' stones will be presented by the Foundation in recognition of the generosity of the Founding
Partners - individuals, businesses and organisations that have made significant contributions towards the redevelopment
of The Dowse.

THE NEW COOL [ON NOW > SEPTEMBER 4]
Aotearoa's new generation of street-smart entrepreneurs are the undisputed New Cool in business. They're young, hip,
totally ambitious and have leapt into the business world from our ski fields, skate parks, clubs, spacie parlours,
uni's, art schools and back streets. The New Cool is a multimedia exhibition featuring 12 street-smart companies who are

EVENTS : TAKI RUA THEATRE >> Taku Raukura E [WED, AUGUST 17 @ 10AM]
Taki Rua Productions presents Taku Raukura E... A play in Te Reo Maori by Materoa Haenga and directed by Tina Cook. This
play is the story of Raukura who, with the assistance of her manu kaitiaki (guardian bird), learns to overcome the
bullying and torments of her peers. It is ideal for Te Reo speakers of all ages, and bilingual and immersion classes,
years 0 - 10. The performance will be held at The Dowse.

LONG LIVE THE KING [ON NOW >> AUGUST 30]
This extraordinary collection of work by Wellington photographer John Savage is a celebration of devotion to the
hip-swivelling, toe-tapping, smokey-eyed memory of Elvis Presley. This exhibition draws on material shot in Memphis
during "Elvis Week", an annual celebration of Presley's life and music. More

THE FAMILY [ON NOW >> AUGUST 21]
The Family is much-loved and holds a very special place in The Dowse's permanent collection. This artwork is comprised
of 35 dolls by artist Malcolm Harrison and has, like any family grown in a random and somewhat unplanned way - and they
make a very eclectic bunch..! This exhibition has an in-gallery make-your-own doll activity... and with over 1500 paper
dolls now lining the walls of the gallery the Dowse Family continues to grow!
