Press release: 26 July 2005
Put this in your diaries!
Queen of the Whole Universe, Auckland, November, 2005
“Beauty Queens” from throughout the Universe will descend on Auckland in November for a very queer beauty pageant ‘Queen
of the Whole Universe” - a spectacular night of glamour and entertainment.
Of course, this is a beauty pageant with a twist – most of the contestants are men – but you can be sure there will be
no lack of spectacle, suspense or surprises, as each ‘princess’ sets her sights on the coveted crown.
Following the success in 2004 of “Queen of the Whole Pacific” the pageant is a fundraiser on behalf of the New Zealand
AIDS Foundation, which puts the money toward important HIV/AIDS and community advocacy work not funded by its Ministry
of Health contracts.
Executive Director Rachael Le Mesurier says the fund raising is important but so is the visibility the event creates for
the gay community. “This is our chance to celebrate and applaud the value of diversity and the contribution gays make to
the Aotearoa New Zealand. Building supportive environments within the mainstream for minority communities is an
essential component of our campaign to reduce the spread of HIV.”
This year, the NZAF says, the pageant is promising more: More contestants, more countries represented and more
competition. The 2005 pageant will take the audience beyond the Pacific Rim with contestants from as far away as
Slovenia, and beyond. Miss Uranus is just one of the exotic entries that promise an unforgettable event. Will our
reigning queen retain her title, or will Miss Iceland freeze her out? And, just how many muscle boys does it take to
carry Miss Trinidad & Tobago? Siamese twins we’ve heard!
