July News...
One Million Dollars are making a splash on Italian radio. Their track Who You Are is currently playing on Radio Ciao
and Radio Montecarlo amongst others; and they have done interviews with several publications including the influential
Acid Jazz magazine. On Radio Ciao Who You Are is currently holding off the Gorillaz, Madness, Turin Brakes and Garbage
with Snoop Dogg and Moby firmly in its sights on the playlist top tunes.
The Demi Whores (Powertoool Records) will support Interpol on their NZ tour. Promoter Mystery Girl sent CDs from NZ acts
directly to Interpol in New York who wanted to pick their support act themselves. Interpol and The Demi Whores play
Auckland's St James Theatre August 2 and Wellington's Victoria University August 3.
The Brunettes have been on the road in the US since April 7, touring with US bands the Shins and Rilo Kiley. They have
performed to more than 100,000 people over 55 shows in the USA and Canada. Lead vocalists Jonathan Bree and Heather
Mansfield will remain in the US where they will begin work on The Brunettes’ third album, scheduled for release early
2006.
Portland based film-makers Your Mom Films, who have made videos for the Shins, Dandy Warhols and the Decemberists are
making The Brunettes’ new NZ on Air-funded video this month. The Lil’ Chief compilation 'Now We Are Three' featuring The
Brunettes, The Tokey Tones, The Nudie Suits and Ed Cake among others is receiving good rotation on college radio.
The Brunettes’ rhythm section James Milne (bass) and Ryan McPhun (drums), also being the frontmen of Auckland bands the
Reduction Agents and Ryan McPhun and the Ruby Suns, have returned to New Zealand, and will release their respective
albums on Lil Chief Records this year and join The Brunettes later on to complete recording and tour the third album.
This Night Creeps’ album ‘The Noise of Music has been released in Australia through Building Records distributed through
Shock, and the band are touring Australia from August 30th. Kitsch will release their 3rd album ‘Burning Ground’ (1157)
on August 15th, featuring Evan Short (Concord Dawn) on bass and production duties. The Bleeders have played their last
New Zealand show prior to heading to the US to record their debut album for Universal.
Ardijah have been invited to perform at the Native Roots and Rhythms Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico in August, as well
as four other showcase gigs with local Native American artists in New Mexico and Arizona.
International Observer's second album 'All Played Out' is being released through Round Trip Mars in mid August. Amongst
the lucky 13 tracks are new mixes of London, (The More) We Know, 2 Steps At A Time Sweet Jesus and Vale as well as a
slew of brand new sub-bass stonkers from The Rt. Hon Tom Bailey. Kid Loco's rework of SJD's Southern Lights that has
topped the Median Strip Alternative Chart will be made available alongside other fresh goodies on vinyl and disc later
in the year.
Autozamm have released their debut album ‘As For Now’ on Flaming Pearl/Global Routes; this comes out under NZ On Air’s
Phase 4 album scheme.
The double disc sequel to 2003's 'WestSteez' compilation 'WestSteez 2' is out now, featuring West Auckland hip hoppers
such as 4th Element, Sky High, Albino, Truce Lee, Sativa Souls, Kritical Methods and many more. The project series is
part funded by the Waitakere City Council. 'WestSteez 2' features 15 new songs, and a bonus free mix CD with the
high-lights from 'WestSteez Volume 1' intertwined with exclusive new freestyles from 4th Element and Sky High.
Heats have started for the New Zealand leg of the World Battle of the Bands; Hong Kong heats have happened; they’re
starting in Singapore and the Philippines in August and LA and Australia in September. Visit
