Free Ski Junior Nationals
Young free skiers from throughout New Zealand will show just how promising the future of the sport is in the inaugural Junior Free Ski Nationals at Cardrona Alpine Resort on 5-7 August.
With national titles going out to boys and girls in under 18’s, under 16’s, under 14’s, under 12’s, and under 10’s age groups, the event will showcase New Zealand’s young talent in the Volkl Big Mountain, K2 Halfpipe and Skier-X and the Calhar Slopestyle.
New Zealand’s current national halfpipe and slopestyle champion, Jossi Wells.
“It’s going to be an interesting competition as many of New Zealand’s top free skiers are under 18,” said Hamish Acland, president of the Free Ski Association of New Zealand. “We decided to separate the Juniors from the Open competition to create more opportunity to nurture and support grass roots talent when competing against their own age. The fact that New Zealand’s current national halfpipe and slopestyle champion, Jossi Wells, is only 15 is a huge inspiration to youngsters coming up through the ranks.”
The Volkl Big Mountain will take place on 5 August, followed by the K2 Halfpipe and Skier-X on the 6th finishing with the Calhar Slopestyle on the 7th. Registration is from 8am – 9.30am on the day at Cardrona Alpine Resort. For more information visit http://www.freeskier.co.nz.
