High Speed And Rails In The Supersport At Cardrona
Free skiers of all ages took on Cardrona’s terrain park rails and high-speed downhill course in this year’s Volkl Supersport Challenge on Saturday 16 July.
An informal rail jam kicked proceedings off with the rider-judged event pronouncing 15-year-old Jossi Wells as the open men’s winner and Keri Herman from the USA as open women’s winner. Jossi’s younger brother Byron (12) took out the junior boys title.
“Jossi was just killing it,” said fellow competitor Jenn Hirsch. “Spinning on and off the rails, going so big – amazing!”
The main event of the day, the Volkl Vertical Hoon took place after the ski area had closed to the public. The cloud cleared to reveal a course especially designed by Cardrona events manager, Jeff Hodge and Volkl’s Charlie Anderson. “It’ll definitely put the guys and girls to the test – especially at the speeds they’ll be travelling!”
Competitors raced four at a time from the top of Captain’s Basin to the bottom with just a few gates strategically placed to check speed. Charlie Lyons from Christchurch was the fastest open men’s with Wanaka’s Jossi Wells securing his second victory of the day on taking out the junior men’s. Erin McDougall from Wanaka was the fastest girl.
