Radio Active 89fm Handle the Jandal
NZ Music Video Competition
Entries for the countries top DIY NZ Music competition are now open. Radio Active is getting the word out for the 8th annual Handle the Jandal Competition.
Last year novice and professional filmmakers sent in over 70 entries from around the country. This year we’re after more. The awards ceremony at Wellington’s Embassy Theatre in September will feature 15 finalists, vying for top honours across six categories; Best use of exploitative tactics to promote band, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Concept, Best Animation and Rising Star.
Audience participation on the night will nail the seventh golden flip flop category; the Favourite Handle the Jandal Video award winner and two runner ups.
Radio Active 89FM launched the awards, honouring our most innovative, inspired and truly magical independent music videos, seven years ago. At that time, there were few public screening opportunities for the number eight wire independent music video. Today, local television and the film industry have embraced homegrown music videos and a Golden Jandal is a golden calling card for emerging directors.
Music video entries have been crafted for the likes of Twinset, Ebb, The Phoenix Foundation, Rhian Sheehan, Goodshirt, Sola Rosa and Agent Alvin. Past winner Rollo Wendlock went on to produce a music video for electro superstars the Prodigy in Europe.
The competition motivates musicians to fast track the music video making process in time for the July 25th deadline. In return for the all-nighters and editing headaches filmmakers get props from their peers and maybe a brand spanking new camera, (prizes to be confirmed).
Interviews can be arranged with past winners and Radio Active Manager Dave Gibbons.
