King Country fencer gets golden accolade
Slow and steady has paid off for King Country fencer Owen Peterson who was awarded the Fieldays fencing championship Golden Pliers this afternoon.
Peterson finished his final heat in the Fieldays Waikato Draught-Wiremark fencing championships in a time of six hours and 15 minutes. Long-time Wiremark Golden Pliers title-holder Paul Van Beers was second with a time of five hours and 41 minutes.
Fieldays fencing chairman Warwick Hay said it was excellent to see Peterson awarded the pliers after he was awarded with the doubles title last year, only to have it revoked due to a judging error.
“The quality of fencing this year has been excellent,” Hay said.
“Owen was last to finish, one hour and 40 minutes after the first finisher, but his fence was technically the best.”
Paul Van Beers (Porangahau) didn’t go home empty-handed, however, as he and fencing partner Wayne Newdick (Taumaranui) were named the 2005 doubles champions.
The pair has dominated Fieldays competition fencing over the past decade, and Hay said they’re in the in-form fencers, so were the “obvious, but well-deserved” winners.
A “consolation round” was introduced to the competition in 2004, and the 2005 winner was Kaponga fencer Maurice Kissock.
Sponsor Pacific Wire group sales and planning manager Mike Babich said it was great to see new entrants for 2005.
“There were seven first-timers in the singles competition, two of whom made the consolation final,” he said.
“And there was good interest around the site, which we’d like to see more of next year.
