TO LOVE A MAORI
Jeremy Hansen saw the first Star Wars film when he was growing up in Wairoa, and when he went back last weekend for the
inaugural Maori Film Festival, he found it entirely appropriate that the latest Star Wars instalment is showing,
featuring three Maori actors. Jeremy reports on the festival highlights, and finds out what happened to the hot guy from
Rudall and Ramai Hayward’s “To Love a Maori”.
SHE SAID
Photographer Deborah Smith invited Marti Friedlander to exhibit with her at John Leech Gallery during the Auckland
Photography Festival. Deborah chose the work, and the resulting exhibition “She Said” looks at the way both
photographers have captured childhood in their lenses.
SPIRITUAL INSPIRATION
Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City church becomes an art gallery next week to celebrate its centenary and raise funds for
restoration. A host of respected sculptors have created works “suitable for a domestic environment”, many of which also
carry a spiritual theme. Frontseat previews the exhibition.
