In 2005 TRASH TO FASHION® celebrates its 10th Anniversary with a theme that embraces Kiwi Culture. National
Registrations are now open for the eight award categories for this impressive and well-established annual event.
Trash to Fashion® attracts a huge number of participants from all over New Zealand. Emerging and established designers
are joined by entrants from a variety of age-groups, cultures and abilities. In addition the showcase features a core
cast of 40 professional dancers and models, a large number of Waitakere and Auckland based performance artists, as well
as a selection of special celebrity guests, some of whom will appear in the unique audio visual component of the show.
Waitakere City Council, Keep Waitakere Beautiful and the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts are delighted to confirm
the 2005 dates as the 25th and 26th of November. The Trusts Stadium, Central Park Drive Henderson, will house this event
for its second year running, and is expected to attract 9000 people from all over Auckland.
Trash to Fashion® is a spectacular and highly theatrical event. The catwalk is littered with stunning and highly
inventive costumes created out of recycled, inorganic and organic materials. Created in the spirit of fun these striking
creations carry with them an important social message. To recycle, reuse and ultimately reduce waste.
The Trusts 10th Anniversary Trash to Fashion® Awards 2005 categories are
GOODYGOODY GUMDROPS- (primary and intermediate students)
School's out for the holidays and it's time to play! Anything in the playground is fair game here. Characters from the
depths of your imagination can be brought to life. Live snakes and ladders, or the monster of hopscotch. And what about
your favourite ice-cream flavour - in a skirt?
SWEET AS! - (Secondary school students)
Girls may be pretty and sweet but now's the chance for the boys to step up and battle for the title in this section.
We're looking for costumes that can really move here. Dig out your old hoody and trick it up a bit. Styles that are
sweet as to wear and gears that are ready to party!
A GOOD KEEN MAN - (Menswear category)
In the true tradition of the kiwi bloke, ransack the tool shed for your materials and whip up a great new kiwi
invention. From the BBQ to the sports field, don't throw that beer can away! Create your own version of the New Kiwi
Swandri, and don't leave your Stubbies at home! Show your Sheila that men have style too. Good on ya mate!
DOWN TO EARTH - (Organic category)
100% biodegradable, this category is made entirely of our world, for our world. Be mindful of how you construct your
garment for this section, from the tape to the trimmings. We invite you to create party creatures from another New
Zealand, a truly clean green Aotearoa. Take a stroll down your local beach, bush, or stream and collect Mother Nature's
materials for your design.
LADIES A PLATE AND THE ALL BLACK SECTION - (Glamour category)
As it's our anniversary, this year we've decided to make a special kiwi party section. So we've made two parts to the
glamour category. The first, "Ladies a Plate" invokes that great glam era of the 1950s when men were gentlemen and the
ladies could whip up a batch of scones before morning tea. This is a chance for you to delve into New Zealand's glamour
history and design that special outfit for the dinner party of all dinner parties!
In the second part of this section we're looking for frocks and shocks that are drop dead gorgeous and All Black! Black
is the celebratory colour of New Zealand sport so we're giving you the chance to make it the choice for parties too. Get
outlandishly decadent with your sparkly bits, just so long as the end result is a. Brilliance in Black.
IT'S IN THE BAG - (Street Wear category)
This was an iconic kiwi show where whole towns came out to party on national television. We'd like you to get down and
get funky with some retro threads that wouldn't have looked out of place on the show. Get out your Granddad's cardie or
your Nana's twin-set and sew yourself into a new design to be worn 'out and about', and really make an impression on the
dance floor.
NUMBER 8 WIRE - (Industrial/Inorganic category)
Kiwis can make anything out of a bit of four-by-two and a length of number 8 wire and we're counting on you to prove it!
Take the Ute (or MPV) down to the farm, the 'dump' or the garage and stock up on all the leftovers you can find. This is
a chance to showcase real kiwi ingenuity, so bring it out of the shed and onto the stage.
TIKI TOUR - (Ethnic category)
Bring the flavours and textures of your very own local traditions to New Zealand. This year we're encouraging all
cultures to give us a tour of their community within their garments. Let the colours, patterns and images of your land
influence your design, and our celebration on the main stage.
So bring in your garbage - unleash you creativity and get busy. There's no time to waste, registrations close on the
15th July.
