Growing in stature since its inception in 2002 the Body Festival is quickly becoming a key arts event in the New Zealand cultural calendar. In 2004 over 12,500 people took part in workshops and performances over a two-week period and it is expected that these numbers will continue to grow over the next few years with commissioned New Zealand works and International performances already being organised for 2006.
The 2005 festival provides an enormous opportunity for everybody to go out and try a range of exciting dance activities in a friendly and supportive environment. The central aim is to showcase lots of dance styles and to expose the public to all the different dance options in Christchurch by focusing on community and cultural group performances and workshops.
Highlights for this year's festival include:
· 12 workshops in the foyer of the Christchurch Art Gallery in: Capoeira, Poi, Breakdance, Bollywood, Balkan dance, African, Jive, Collegiate Shag, Contemporary, Flamenco, Tango and Salsa and Merengue.
· Lloyd Newson, artistic director, of DV8's award winning short film 'The Cost of Living' in 'The Body on Film International'
