What do monkeys, 48May, frogs, crocodiles, cellphones, Bart, Archie, the feelers and cartoons have in common?
Let's begin with monkeys, or more specifically, that higher form of primate, Gorillas. Make that Gorillaz... the virtual cartoon band comprising Noodle, Murdoc, 2-D and Russell who inhabit the virtual world of www.gorillaz.com .
This week its sophomore set Demon Days debuts at #8 here (it's #1 in the UK and #2 in Aussie), while the set's first single, Feel Good Inc ( featuring De La Soul), lies at #76 on the RadioScope 100. The group's first album yielded a #1 single in 19/2000 in 2002...
*****
Which brings us to other virtual (read that as cartoon) hit-makers - Schnappi. The German cartoon croc peaked at #2 just two weeks ago and is back up to #2 this week.
Now those Germans are at it again! Crazy Frog, a ten-second ringtone, has topped the UK Singles chart. German telecom company Jamster picked up the rights to Crazy Frog, a viral flash animation and ringtone, and found it was so popular that German producers the Bass Bumpers were brought in to create a proper "song" out of it.
They put the ringtone over Axel F (a #5 hit in 1985 for German keyboardist Harold Faltermeyer from the Eddie Murphy movie Beverley Hills Cop 2). Featuring in ads for Jamster, the track is the UK's #1 this week albeit one that you either love or hate!
*****
None of the above was the first cartoon act to hit the charts in New Zealand, however. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead got to #10 in 1970 as The Archies with Jingle Jangle (surprisingly Sugar Sugar, a US #1, didn't chart here!)
And this is where Bart comes in... The Simpsons provided us with our first animated #1, Do The Bartman, which was top of the stack for three weeks in 1991. And to prove it was no fluke, the follow-up, Deep Deep Trouble, peaked at #10. The Simpsons Sing The Blues album got as high as #2.
*****
Which is where the link between 48May and the feelers comes in. That link is Greg Haver, the Welsh producer and regular visitor to these shores, who co-wrote and produced The Ten Commandments Of Bart from The Simpsons' The Yellow Album. He also produced 48May's Top 20 hit Leather & Tattoos, as well as the feelers' current top 10 album Playground Battle.
Phew!
Audioslave's Return From Exile
#1 straight out of the box, Audioslave's Out Of Exile betters the #13 start of the group's self-titled debut set from December 2002. Three years between releases seems to have worked in Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford's favour. They also debut at #3 in Australia and at #5 in the old country.
The set's lead single Be Yourself is #14 on the RadioScope 100 this week, #39 on the Singles Chart and has already been to #1 on the RadioScope Rock Chart.
Elvis Sightings
Twenty-eight years after his death and there's another Elvis album... and, in keeping with the times, a DVD as well.
Elvis By The Presleys is the 'authorised' collection (ie. compiled with help from the family) and is the King's story as told from the inside by former wife Priscilla and his only child, Lisa-Marie.
The broadcast version played on TV One last Saturday night, while the DVD version is a four-hour set about the private Elvis. It debuts at #9 on the DVD chart, becoming his third appearance on that list after the Aloha From Hawaii and Comeback Special sets. Then there's the accompanying two-CD soundtrack that includes four 'new' tracks and marks the first time Elvis has ever hit the Heatseekers list.
The New Singles
Black Eyed Peas reign supreme for a second week atop a reasonably quiet Singles chart. Coldplay makes the biggest leap of the week from #35 to #16 (the only double-digit climb of the week).
*****
#33 Cydel - Luv Is
Otara Auckland duo David Letoa and Saipele Nili, aka Cydel, prove independent distribution and promotion is no deterrent to having a hit. Cydel's first hit is the self-composed Luv Is (which also features Emmanuel Ensink on keyboards and Eric Niu on guitar). It's on the new Groovehouse label distributed by indie King Music - whose last hit was Fast Crew's I Got (which got to #4 here and is currently #23 in Oz).
*****
#38 Jennifer Lopez feat. Fat Joe - Hold You Down
J-Lo follows her recent Top 10 hit Get Right with the second cut lifted from Rebirth. This time she teams up with Fat Joe and Hold You Down is new in at #38. Joe's no stranger to Jenny, having helped out on her debut album.
New Albums
A very strong week sales-wise, with all Top 4 albums #1 contenders (and more than likely would have been in a slower sales period), with stronger yet to come as a big battle looms in the next two weeks between the new Coldplay and Black Eyed Peas albums, followed a week later by Dave Dobbyn.
*****
#1 Audioslave - Out Of Exile
See story above.
*****
#8 Gorillaz - Demon Days

*****
#35 Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up
South African-born, New York-raised Dave Matthews and his band (Leroi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Stefan Lessard and Carter Beauford) place their former US #1 album into our chart at #35 in its first week. The band's first New Zealand-charting set, Crash, reached #37 in 1996.
*****
#39 Mariah Carey - The Emancipation Of Mimi
Mariah's 10th studio album finally cracks the Top 40 after seven weeks in the Heatseekers Chart. It's a former US #1 seller and spawns this week's US #1 single We Belong Together, her 16th chart-topper in her homeland.
Mariah has scored two #1 albums here, 1992's MTV Unplugged and 1995's Daydream. On the singles side there are half a dozen that have made the top, including her debut hit Vision Of Love (1990).
