June highlights @ Te Papa
Come along and find out why Holbein to Hockney: Drawings from the Royal Collection is so popular! These extraordinary
works by some of the world's greatest artists - including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Dürer - will astonish
you. On weekends or Thursdays, join a knowledgeable Host for a guided tour of the exhibition. A lecture by well-known
Auckland curator Mary Kisler, 'A fearful joy: the paradox of pregnancy in Holbein's Portrait of Cicely Heron', will also
offer fascinating insights.
This winter, celebrate Matariki, the Mäori New Year, at Te Papa. A variety of lively events will mark this special time.
Leading Mäori performers Moana & the Tribe and Whirimako Black will perform in two world-class toi ihoTM concerts. Popular actress and singer Mere
Boynton will launch her latest CD, and Carol Henry will perform works from her debut album. Canti Mäori will offer an
exciting mix of traditional Mäori incantations and instruments with Italian opera. At Queen's Birthday weekend, Te Papa
celebrates the centuries-old art of poi with a gathering of renowned weavers from around the country. Talk to and watch
these experts as they demonstrate their beautiful art form.
Matariki is a time to reflect on the year that was and the year that will be. A series of lunchtime discussions will
feature topics such as Mäori language, medicine, horticulture, and tourism. Enjoy a stimulating, informal meeting of
minds.
Also take the chance to visit Wild Water. This exciting makeover of a section of Te Papa's permanent Awesome Forces
exhibition explores the power of water - including tsunamis - in shaping our landscape.

Celebrate the opening of Matariki (Mäori New Year) with passionate and rousing kapa haka (performance) by this 40-strong

2pm-2.45pm: A fearful joy: the paradox of pregnancy in Holbein's Portrait of Cicely Heron. For Renaissance women,
pregnancy was a mixed blessing - it showed fertility, but the risks were high. Portraits were in part a reminder of a
mother who might be lost in childbirth. Hear Mary Kisler, Mackelvie Curator of International Art at Auckland Art Gallery

12.30pm-1.30pm: Waikohu - Mere Boynton's CD launch. Some of the hottest names in contemporary New Zealand performance
feature on this collaborative CD by acclaimed actress and singer Mere Boynton. To produce the CD, Mere collaborated in a
variety of styles with artists including Gareth Farr, Richard Nunns, and the percussionists of Strike. The Marae, Level

2pm-3pm: Canti Mäori. Enjoy this innovative and exciting mix of traditional Mäori instruments, voices, and incantations

12.15pm-1pm: Ngä Reo o Matariki - Mäori Horticulture. Join Nick Roskruge (Atiawa and Ngäti Tama) of Massey University
and Dr Ocean Mercier (Ngäti Porou) of Victoria University along with Turama Hawira from Whanganui iwi (tribal groups) as

An exhibition of seventy-six works representing a selection of the most significant drawings from the Royal Collection
including works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Durer.

This intriguing selection of works on paper by New Zealand artists illustrates a time of emerging nationalism and

Te Awa Tupua: The Whanganui Iwi Exhibition
In partnership with Te Papa, Whanganui iwi present stories and taonga from their unique Whanganui river culture, from Te
Kähui Maunga (the mountain clan) to Tangaroa (the sea). The exhibition's central theme is contained in the whakatauakï
(proverb), 'E rere kau mai te awa nui mai Te Kähui Maunga ki Tangaroa, ko au te awa ko te awa ko au.' (The great river
flows from the mountain clan to Tangaroa, I am the river; the river is me).
