In celebration of Matariki, or the Maori New Year, Maori Television's urban live music show COAST makes a break from Maori Television's Auckland studios to a live special from Wellington on Thursday June 16 at 9.00 PM.
Broadcast live from Wellington's Sandwiches Lounge Bar and Club, the COAST MATARIKI SPECIAL features the sultry-voiced Lisa Tomlins, indigenous Wellington hip hop crew the Footsouljahs and windy city rhymers the Stepkingz across 1.5 hours of New Year celebrations.
Maori Television will continue to uphold Matariki celebrations from the period of Monday June 6 to Sunday June 19 across the channel in a range of Matariki-themed programming.

TE KAEA, TE HETERI and CODE
From Monday June 6 to Sunday June 19, Maori Television's flagship news, current affairs and sports programmes will feature Matariki-related news stories, field items and profiles. From a special bulletin on the Te Huapae o Matariki fashion show in Taumarunui to the celebration of Maoridom's rising sports stars, this Matariki is being celebrated by Maori Television's key information programmes.
MATARIKI : TATAI ARORANGI
Monday June 6 at 8.30 PM
The astronomical knowledge and practices of navigation by stars shines on Maori Television viewers' screens for this year's Matariki celebrations in this one-hour documentary. Produced by Te Arepa Kahi of Arepa Creations, the bilingual documentary explains the functions and uses of our most treasured celestial bodies, including the Seven Sisters or Pleiades that signal the start of the Maori New Year upon their rising.
TAUPATUPATU MATARIKI SPECIAL
Sunday June 12 at 8.00 PM
Join host Julian Wilcox and Maori speakers of the finest echelon for a one-off special of Maori Television's debating series. The special places Moe Milne (Ngati Hine / Ngapuhi), Tihi Puanaki (Ngati Hine / Ngapuhi) and Tini Molyneux (Tuhoe / Ngati Kahungunu) against Dr Patu Hohepa (Ngapuhi), Ching Te Hau Tutua (Ngati Awa) and Ruakere Hond (Taranaki) in an all-out battle of the sexes to debate the moot Is Matariki relevant to us?
THE MATARIKI SUNDAY FEATURE

Maori Television launches advertisement-free Sunday movies in honour of Matariki with the 1996 New Zealand feature film FLIGHT OF THE ALBATROSS, reversioned into te reo Maori for broadcast on Maori Television.
NGA KETE O TE MATAURANGA
Monday June 13 at 8.30 PM
Presented by Amster Reedy and directed by Jan Wharekawa, this one-hour documentary introduces a host of Maori spiritual and cultural practices by Matariki to the uninitiated. Starting with Te Taura Whiri chief executive officer Haami Piripi presenting an overview of the event, further studio panel discussions amongst kaumatua and knowledgeable Maori hosted by Reedy are interspersed with field segments of an artistic nature.
Please note : Livingstone Productions will broadcast a live variety special named HUAMATA from Maori Television's studios on Sunday June 19 at 9.00 PM. Details of these programmes will be distributed at a later date.
