St Matthew’s Centenary Organ Recital Series in Full Swing
As part of celebrations for its Centenary, Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City Anglican Church is holding a series of lunchtime concerts featuring some of the city’s finest organists.
The recital series aims to increase appreciation for the historic Father Willis pipe organ that has resided in the church for almost 100 years.
St Matthew’s is currently fundraising to have the grand instrument relocated to its originally intended position; with the pipes suspended in the loft above and to the side of the chancel, near the altar.
The next concert will take place on Friday, May 27th, featuring Indra Hughes, Director of the Musica Sacra choir. Future recitals will feature St Matthew’s resident organist Michael C.W. Bell (June 3rd) and Anita Banbury (June 24th).
The recitals begin at 1.00pm. Entry is $10 with funds being donated to the organ restoration project.
Other Centenary events being held at St Matthew’s in the near future include a sculpture exhibition (June 16-21) and a special service for wedding couples married at the church (July 31).
