TRAINING CAMPS FOR FANS COULD BE WARRIORS’ SECRET WEAPON
A top squad of Vodafone Warriors rugby league supporters will soon be put through its paces at a first-of-its-kind boot camp for fans.
As the Vodafone Warriors gear up for the forthcoming league season, some of their fans will also be training hard for the tough schedule of games ahead.
Vodafone, who recently renewed its sponsorship of the Warriors team, is running “Fan Camps” in Auckland and Hamilton to ensure that supporters are fully primed and match-fit for the big home games.
Coached by television sports presenter Tony Veitch, the fan squad will undergo a rigorous programme of chanting, face painting, performing Mexican waves and practising the haka. Other important fan skills such as sausage-eating and La-Z-Boy-lounging will also be tested.
After the camp the team will have the meanest, keenest fan squad in rugby league, ready to leave the opposition’s fans in the dust.
Fresh from their intensive training session, the fan camp recruits will attend the Vodafone Warriors game the next day to put their newly honed skills into practice.
Vodafone Sponsorship Portfolio Manager, Johnny Rodgers, says that a stand full of loudly enthusiastic fans can be the X-factor that makes all the difference to a game.
“When the team are out on the field and can hear the fans yelling and cheering, it can really make a difference and give them that bit extra when they need it.”
The first Vodafone Warriors Fan Camp will be held on Saturday 28 May at the Orakei Domain at Auckland’s Okahu Bay. Several of the Vodafone Warriors will be there to meet the fan squad and personally thank them on behalf of the team. A second Fan Camp will take place in Hamilton prior to the match against the Paramatta Eels mid June.
The search for fans to attend the Auckland Fan Camp starts on Monday 16 May on the The Edge FM’s Morning Madhouse breakfast radio show. Fans can register via the web at www.theedge.co.nz
