“He Ara Puoro (A Pathway of Song)”, a new Concert FM radio series looking at traditional Maori instruments, is now
available on the Internet as audio-on-demand.
The series is a collaboration between Richard Nunns and Radio New Zealand, in which Richard will play and begin to
describe the many traditional Maori instruments in his collection.
Over the last thirty years Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and the late Hirini Melbourne travelled New Zealand talking to
elders about traditional Maori instruments, their voices and functions. Through expert craftsmanship and musicianship
the trio gave breath to voices that hadn't been heard for generations.
The start of this year saw Richard Nunns recording the first twenty features, each lasting around eight minutes. Each
feature has Richard playing an instrument and then talking about its individual history and context, giving an
entry-point for listeners into the trio’s thirty-year journey.
The website, http://www.radionz.co.nz/richardnunns contains all twenty audio features plus images of the instruments.
“He Ara Puoro (A Pathway of Song)” will also be broadcast nation-wide weekdays just after the news at midday and at 5pm
starting Monday 23 May on Concert FM.
