Call for over-the-top Excessive Accessories
Wellington City Council has developed a WOW® accessories competition to complement the magnificent Montana World of
WearableArt™ Awards Show and is calling for entries. The accessories will feature in a colourful and imaginative street
parade on Friday 23 September designed to welcome the Montana WOW® Awards Show and visitors to the city.
“There is a wealth of talent out there in community arts groups and studios, as well as budding set and prop designers.
We’re looking for community artists and designers to register their interest in creating a work of art to be part of the
competition and the parade,” says City Council Events Co-ordinator Jessica Garland.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for creative people to have their work exhibited in a parade when the city will be
buzzing with excitement with many visitors and media in town for the show.”
The theme – Excessive Accessories – is about enhancing and exaggerating accessories in wild and wonderful ways and
turning them into pieces of art. Everyday people use bags, suitcases and hats, and ornament their bodies with jewellery
and scarves – this theme is a chance to recreate these ideas but in a much larger, colourful and wacky way.
“This city-wide celebration of colour and exuberance is a great way to bring the excitement of the show to the streets,”
says Suzie Moncrieff, Creator/Director of World of WearableArt™ Ltd.
The Council is calling for design submissions. A panel will then select 100 works to be created for the parade and the
Council will contribute $75 towards materials for each artist/designer selected to make their work.
Höglund Art Glass Wellington is designing and creating a special piece of art glass to be presented to the most
imaginative work on parade day. Two more pieces will be given to works of distinction.
“We have had a long association with the Montana WOW® Awards Show and it is exciting to be a part of these fun
festivities in Wellington,” says Janice Hill from Höglund Art Glass.
Some of the Excessive Accessories will also be selected for a two-week exhibition at the new Arts Centre in Abel Smith
Street.
Information and design submission forms are available from jessica.garland@wcc.govt.nz. The final date for design
submission is 5pm, Friday 17 June and entrants will be notified one week later if their designs have been selected to be
part of the parade.
