Mayor backs Rugby World Cup bid boots ‘n’ all
Auckland’s Mayor, Dick Hubbard, says the 2011 Rugby World Cup could be the most important event to hit Auckland next
decade if the Rugby Union’s bid for the event succeeds.
“I’m putting the weight of 420,000 Aucklanders behind this bid. The economic and social spin-offs would be colossal.
Even folks with no interest in rugby can see the benefits,” says Mr Hubbard.
“In terms of international events, the Rugby World Cup is one level down from the Olympics. It has more impact on a
nation than the Commonwealth Games given its broad global appeal.
“Over the next six months we will be working closely and proactively with the Rugby Union, the Eden Park Trust Board and
central government to ensure New Zealand has every chance to host this event.
“Auckland knows how to turn on major events and we know how to have fun. We will once again prove this in July when the
Lions Series hits town.
“Fortunately the Lions Series occurs during the bid’s evaluation period and we’ll be moving heaven and earth to ensure
an enjoyable, memorable and smooth running event.
“I am extremely hopeful that the Rugby Union’s bid will be successful and we will use the next six years to prepare the
city for an international event of this scale.
“I am delighted that the NZRU has the vision and the faith to bid for this opportunity. The city is behind it one
hundred and ten percent.”
