KAI TIME ON THE ROAD IN THE MANGROVES AT MATAKANA ISLAND
Te Moutere – or Matakana Island – takes the spotlight in all its muddy glory on KAI TIME ON THE ROAD this week (Thursday
May 26 at 8.00 PM) as hosts Pete Peeti and Kingi Biddle hit the low tide in search of the perfect pacific oyster.
KAI TIME ON THE ROAD launched its fourth series on Maori Television on Thursday May 12 with celebrated chef host Pete
Peeti and his new comical sidekick Kingi Biddle in tow. Bringing the most succulent Maori recipes to viewers for the
fourth round sees the lovable duo hit the rivers, valleys, bush and open seas of the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and
greater Rotorua area in search of more delectable kai.
This week, it’s hitting the mangroves on horseback as they catch up with the people of Ngai te Rangi at Matakana Island,
off the coast of Tauranga. Presented in a bilingual format, kaumatua Patrick Douglas runs off the list of sea bounties
available in the area – from scallops to pipi – but the Kai Time boys are only interested in one thing. The succulent,
creamy pacific oyster.
Pete enlists the help of young local Jarred Murray, aka ‘The Man from Snowy River’, to round up the horses for a
morning’s visit out on the mud flats at low tide. Says Jarred : “horses save our vehicles. They get stuck out there and
sometimes we’ve had to leave them there!”
As Kingi is left behind at shore to korero about the area’s natural resources, Pete gathers enough oysters to serve up a
spectacular meal of Grilled Oysters and Curried Hollandaise. And then, there’s good old-fashioned Banana Loaf to round
off the feed.
In further episodes to come, the culinary capers will keep rolling as the duo check out hydroponically-grown watercress
in Rotorua and venture into the hills of Mamaku in search of the slippery eel.
But for now, feast your eyes on another quintessentially Maori episode of KAI TIME ON THE ROAD, this Thursday May 26 at
8.00 PM.
