MAERSK SEALAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TEAMS RACING DAY TWO
The stronger schools started to emerge as teams went back out on the water this morning in the MAERSK Sealand Secondary
Schools Teams Racing Nationals on at Kohimarama Yacht Club. Winds upwards of 25 knots forced the fleet off the water in
the early afternoon, though racing resumed at around 3pm.
With 63 races now over in the first round robin series the traditionally strong teams are demonstrating their dominance
on the water. At the end of Day Two the scoreboard reflects this with three teams unbeaten after either six, seven or
eight races. Racing was interrupted both yesterday and today which means the initial round robin to decide who goes into
the finals is just over one third complete.
Auckland Grammar School was unbeaten in the round robin in 2004 and is on track to repeat this performance with seven
wins on the board already. The team includes Tom Bilkey fresh out of a win at YouthSail 2005 in the Starling. They are
yet to come up against other 2004 finalists St Cuthbert's College, Mahurangi College and Kerikeri High School.
Last years champions, Kerikeri also remain unbeaten with six race wins under their belt. Mahurangi College won silver in
Timaru in 2004 and has six wins to date putting them on track to make the final four again, if they can continue their
better form.
The other stand-out team at this early stage is Tauranga Boys' College, with seven wins and one loss. Team member Peter
Burling had an impressive YouthSail 2005 regatta taking out the 420 class [with crew Bruce Kennedy] in style. Burling
will represent New Zealand at the ISAF World Youth Championships in July in Korea.
Racing will resume, conditions permitting, at 9am Wednesday morning.
