Reggae fi Peach Friday 22nd April All are welcome to celebrate the life and untimely death of Blair Peach.
Sandwiches is proud to present a night of top reggae to commemorate to anniversary of the death of New Zealander Blair Peach at the hands of the UK Police on April 23, 1979.
Blair was a special needs teacher in East London, where he had taught since his arrival in England in 1969. He was an active Human rights campaigner and a member of the Anti Nazi League. He was attending a Anti Nazi demonstration in Southall in West London where over 2500 Police officers from the “Special Patrol Group” were deployed to protect a mere two dozen National Front members. The police occupied the heart of Southall and engaged in an orgy of racial abuse and vicious violence resulting in the death of Blair Peach and the serious injury of many others.
“DA SPECAIL PATROL DEM A MURDERER”
Blair Peach’s death caused a huge uproar in the UK and prompted Linton Kwesi Johnson to pen the angry activist chant of “Reggae Fi Peach” which drips with rage, disillusionment and vengeance. No police officer has ever been charged for Blair’s death.
Sandwiches would like to provide a scintillating night of fine reggae, dub and dancehall in Blair’s remembrance.
The players on the night are:
Manray (Vital Sounds, Spice Traders) Dj Art (Yardwise, Tu Faan Express) The Spotlight Kid (Spice Traders) Mc Ras Stone (Vital Sounds)
