Afro Vince, Cocoon Baby and Diana’s Diamonds! The Dowse is proud to host the 2005 IHC Telecom Art awards, celebrating
the extraordinary creative talents of New Zealanders with an intellectual disability. The works of 30 finalists have
been selected from over 400 entries nationally for the exhibition, and will be auctioned on May 11. This impressive
collection of works includes art, craft and design and is representative of the enormous amount of work being produced
by people with an intellectual disability around the country, as a vital form of communication and expression. more

[NEW ACQUISITION on show in THE HOUSE OF DOWSE] This cheeky work by local artists Gabby O'Connor and Genevieve Packer
was inspired by Gabby's recent attempts to take craft implements, such as knitting needles, onto airplanes.
Since 9/11 these items have come to be viewed as possible weapons and routinely confiscated...but she found if she wore
her tools on her body - a knitting needle bent into a bracelet for instance - security wouldn't bat any eye! And so
routinely throughout Europe she committed such small acts of craft terrorism. more
From space-invaders to paddling pools, Tip-top icecream, BMX bikes and the local dairy, this series of large-scale
graphic paintings explores issues surrounding identity - about growing up Mâori in an urban environment. This hugely
popular exhibition is of final year work by emerging artist Kelcy Taratoa who will graduate from Te Putahi-A-Toi, Massey
University, Palmerston North, with a Masters of Fine Arts in early 2005.
THE FAMILY [23 APRIL >> 28 AUGUST]
The Family is much-loved and holds a very special place in The Dowse's permanent collection. This artwork is comprised
of 35 dolls by artist Malcolm Harrison and has, like any family grown in a random and somewhat unplanned way - and they
make a very eclectic bunch..! The first family member, Jerry, was born in 1983 and was joined by 33 more over the next
four years. Other family members include a circus busker, a used carriage salesman, an explorer, a showgirl, as well as
babies and children. Each doll was created from Harrison's vast collection of fabrics, buttons, old jewellery, snippets
of lace, pieces of embroidery and hat trimmings.
Stunning multi-media projections by young Maori artist Rachael Rakena, incorporating images of water, submerged kapahaka
performance and floating fragments of email text... The title Rerehiko plays upon the Maori word for computer 'rorohiko'
or 'electric brain', and the substitution of the word 'rere'-meaning to flow or fly, emphasises the free fragmentary
nature of email... more
The 'new' Dowse building redevelopment
The Cafe The Dowse has a reputation not only as a leading creative space but as a great spot for serious coffee and very
yummy cafe food. The 'new' Dowse building redevelopment, designed by Athfield Architects, is scheduled to commence later
this year, and will incorporate cafe seating for 100 people (the current space only accommodates 40 hungry visitors.)
The sophisticated and spacious design features indoor and outdoor courtyard seating, high celings and lots of natural
light - and will be the ideal spot to meet friends and take time out to reflect on your extraordinary Dowse experience!
