The Shimmy – featuring special guest, O.G.
Friday - A monthly shake-down of the left-field sound, featuring residents Zen, Marek, Duncan along with special guests.
Sandwiches is proud to present a club night with a difference: Shimmy. Inspired by masters of the musical mixed bag such as Thievery Corporation, Mr Scruff and Mark Rae, Shimmy embraces the eclectic side of the musical spectrum – a place where reggae, dub, souljazz, and funk hit the dance floor hand in hand with chunky hip-hop, broken beats and left-footed house. Join residents Zen, Marek and Duncan along with a rotating guest list of New Zealand’s most talented and open-minded DJs and musicians in a new monthly night that reveals dance music’s other side.
This month The Shimmy is proud to present O.G. also known as Oakley Grenell. Brother of Shapeshifter's Redford and part of the Otautahi Allstars, Oakley has just spent his last year in London, the time resulting in this diverse and well produced album. Definitely a step up from his debut EP 'Jaded', 'Uncharted' contains a wide range of styles with everything from hip-hop through to dub touched upon. MC Dynamite of Reprazent fame provides the vocals to "Bahm Bahm", an excellent slice of British sounding hip-hop not unlike the work of Roots Manuva and company, that wouldn't sound out of place on the Big Dada imprint. "Limited Time" on the other hand is a slick piece of broken beat soul, straight out of South-West London and featuring the sweet voiced J9 on vocals - she also features strongly on the downbeat "Oceans Apart".
O.G. shows his hand at drum & bass also, check "Sub Rosa", where solid beats meet live guitar, and "Artesia" which is a deep roller, the sort of thing you'd expect to hear on Good Looking. "Sirens" is another shift in direction, a proper slice of reggae-meets-jungle featuring MC Raggadon, while other strong contributions come from MC Rizla on "Smooth Chew", and another Christchurch representative Ladi 6 on "Change For The Better". 'Uncharted' shows a producer coming to terms with himself and his sound, and is all the more rewarding for its adventurous nature. Few musicians can touch upon so many different bases so successfully making 'Uncharted' a musical statement for us all to appreciate, in the process firmly establishing O.G. on NZ's buoyant "contemporary" music scene. Recommended.
