PRESS RELEASE
Dance At The Festival Of Colour
Contemporary dance high in the mountains above Lake Wanaka from Footnote Dance and the latest work by acclaimed
choreographer Raewyn Hill will delight audiences at the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour this autumn.
White, by Raewyn Hill, is a stunning dance of three women in dream-like states: states of sleep, of waking, of being
drunk, of fear, of life, of being. White is a beautiful and powerful representation of the dream world we all escape to
each night. The movement of the dancers is pure and evocative, moving in and out of lightness and darkness. Combined
with Nic McGowan’s stirring sound score, White is a beautiful, moving journey that leaves audiences breathless.
Performed against the spectacular views from Treble Cone Ski Area, Outside the Square is a fun, inspiring and
interactive work from Footnote Dance that encourages audiences to discover movement and explore looking, thinking and
moving in new ways. The five Footnote dancers will take an energetic look at the squares that confine, define, bind and
release us in our day-to-day lives, accompanied by funky New Zealand tunes from the likes of Fly My Pretties, Definite
and Bling as well as a sound score of 'square words' recorded by Nic McGowan.
Throughout the week of the Festival of Colour (27 April – 1 May), Footnote is working with students from Mount Aspiring
College and Dunstan High School to prepare a special one-off event to be performed at the Saturday Street Concert.
Created during the workshops it will explore ideas that come from the heart of the Southern Lakes’ youth.
“It’s such a wonderful opportunity for local students to be able to work with a dance company of Footnote’s calibre,”
said festival director, Philip Tremewan. “It’ll be so exciting to see the students performing with the professionals on
the community stage in Wanaka’s Helwick Street. Combined with the brass band and Goldenhorse, it’s going to be a
stirring Saturday afternoon.”
White takes place at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Wednesday 27 April at 7pm; tickets are $28. Outside the Square is at
Treble Cone Ski Area at 11am on Thursday 28 April with admission $5 on the door. The Street Concert on Saturday 30 April
kicks off at 2.15pm, admission free.
