Flip the Script!
Ever wanted to put your vision up on stage but were scared off by all that ‘playwright’ business? Here’s your chance. If you’re aged 15 to 25 and live North of Taupo you’re invited to write a five minute play for Flip the Script, with successful applicants getting their work performed at THE EDGE as part of Ignite 05 (April 5-9) in a cabaret setting, where the audience (including your mates) get to vote for who goes on to the finals. Think ‘Play Idol’!
Created by Playmarket and THE EDGE, Flip the Script is a New Zealand take on Contact Theatre in Manchester’s renowned playwriting slam. Brand new and existing writers are urged to enter five minute scripts for consideration by 5pm Thursday March 24 to Playmarket via email (scripts@playmarket.org.nz) or post (PO Box 9767, Te Aro, Wellington) – by email preferable. Entries must include name, age, school name (if applicable) and email and physical addresses.
NOTE: Scripts should be designed to have the audience hollering out for more as the winners of heats will then go on to write ten-minute versions of their scripts for the finals.
Twenty scripts will be selected to be performed over four heats in a bar setting, MC’ed by the irrepressible Ms Jan Maree, with the audience voting each evening for which should go on to the final grand slam. Expect much irreverence!
All are invited to come along to Flip the Script in April, where there’ll be an opportunity after Heat 1 for writers to have another crack at the title by providing one of four wildcard entries! I.E. If you don’t get in you’ll get a chance that week to redraft – there’ll also be a chance to have a script session with dramaturg Fiona Graham during the week.
Script Deadline: March 24 (to scripts@playmarket.org.nz)
