Finalists Selected For IHC Telecom Art Awards Exhibition At The Dowse
11 March 2005
Thirty finalists from around New Zealand have been selected for the IHC Telecom Art Awards exhibition at The Dowse in
Lower Hutt from 9 April to 10 July. The finalists were selected from over 400 artworks submitted by artists with
intellectual disabilities throughout New Zealand.
Last year, 300 entries were received for the inaugural IHC Telecom Art Awards and this year’s Awards also attracted
entries from two artists based in the Cook Islands.
George Hill, the 2nd place winner in the inaugural awards in 2004 for his work “Bottom Teeth”, is a finalist again with
a new piece entitled Note No.6.
The three regional judges for the Awards were all struck by the quality of entries for the Awards. Mary Kisler,
Mackelvie Curator of International Art at the Auckland Art Gallery, says she was particularly impressed by the range of
the artwork submitted.
“None of the finalists’ pieces are similar and they are all beautifully presented. From the subjects and images depicted
you could really sense they were by the hand of the artist and the artworks, therefore, provide a fascinating
perspective on the artists’ lives,” she said.
The IHC Telecom Art Awards exhibition at The Dowse in April is believed to be the first national exhibition of artwork
by artists’ with intellectual disabilities. The overall winners of the Awards will be announced at a National Awards
function and auction at The Dowse on 11 May.
The finalists’ work can also be viewed online at www.ihc.org.nz from 1 April, with details on how to bid for individual
artworks.
