Maori Television is gearing up for a celebration of enormous significance as the channel celebrates its first year of
broadcast on March 28 2005.
In celebration of the channel's first birthday celebrations, a host of hand-picked programming has been selected for
special broadcast from the earlier time of noon.
These include:
FLIGHT OF THE ALBATROSS
This 1996 drama classic film about a romantic liaison between a German student and Maori at-risk youth has been
reversioned into te reo Maori specially for broadcast on Maori Television. A world-first premiere in the Maori language,
the film screens at 3.40 PM.
STICKMEN
This sassy New Zealand film by award-winning director Hamish Rothwell also enjoys a world-first premiere in the Maori
language on Maori Television, having also been reversioned. Join the 'Stickmen' in the dark underbelly of Wellington's
pool scene as the special screens at 9.10 PM.
WHARE KORERO
In keeping with Maori Television's commitment to the revitalisation of te reo Maori and culture, the Tainui
Stephens-directed Maori language documentary screens at 8.05 PM. Presented by Dr Timoti Karetu, this documentary
examines the past, present and future of the Maori language.
TAAKOHA AROHA
Te Kaea weekend presenter Rongomainiwaniwa Milroy presents a half-hour special wrap-up of the emotional launch day held
on March 28 2004. The special includes the opening karakia, speeches and songs from the day and will screen at 12.10 PM.
HARI HURITAU 05
A two-hour salute to the 'firsts' undertaken by Maori Television since its broadcasts at 5.30 PM. Including footage and
interviews from programmes such as Kai Time on the Road, Mitre 10 Marae DIY and Maorioke, Te Hamua Nikora presents the
special as a tribute to Maori Television's first year.
HE TITIRO WHAKAMURI
This half-hour sports special revisits the sporting highlights that have been produced on the channel in its first year.
From the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals to the coverage of the Churchill Cup, Maori Television is pleased to showcase its
sporting coverage over the year with a special broadcast at 1.20 PM.
NGATI
The first New Zealand film to be directed and produced by Maori screens as a tribute to Maori Television's forebears in
the film industry. Directed and produced by Barry Barclay, the feature film tracing a young man's re-connection with the
East Coast village of his birth screens at 1.55 PM.
PIO REVISITED
The hilarious out-takes of the best of the award-winning Pio series screens at 12.40 PM. Join Maori entertainer Pio
Terei and his alter-egos in this side-splitting half hour of quintessential Maori entertainment.
TWO CARS ONE NIGHT
As a tribute to Taika Waititi's success at being nominated at the recent Oscars, Maori Television will replay this short
film at 7.50 PM. Join three children in the Te Kaha pub car park where love is discovered in the most unlikely of
places.
In conjunction with this dynamic line-up of Maori programming, Maori Television will also be broadcasting live links
from the Mana Day Out open air concert at Aotea Square and will hold a free Open Day for the public at the channel's
Newmarket-based studios from 10.00 am.
