Awards Programme Announced For Wairoa Maori Film Festival 2005
The organisers of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival 2005 are today proud to announce its awards programme for its
in-competition programme.
The in-competition programme will include categories in: Maori dramatic short films, Maori short-form documentaries,
Maori long-form documentaries and international indigenous film production (all forms). Awards for these four categories
will be sponsored by the Festival Patrons.
An in-competition Festival Prize will be made to the best overall production. The Festival Prize is to be provided by
the National Geographic All Roads Film Project, and will be judged by esteemed guests Cliff Curtis and Merata Mita.
The organisers of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival thank the National Geographic Society for supporting the Festival
Prize.
An audience award will be provided to the most well received film at the festival. All screenings at the festival will
be elegible for the audience award.
An award for Lifetime Achievement will be made to an individual Maori film-maker and/or actor who has made an
outstanding contribution to the film industry over his or her lifetime.
Call for Entries to the in-competition screenings was made in January.
The Call for Entries closing date has been extended to Friday April 1st 2005. Entrants are encouraged to get their
screening tapes in early for full consideration.
In summary, the Wairoa Maori Film Festival in-competition awards programme will comprise:
* $500 - Patrons' Prize: Best Dramatic Short Film - Maori * $500 - Patrons' Prize: Best Short-Form Documentary - Maori
* $500 - Patrons' Prize: Best Long-Form Documentary - Maori * $500 - Patrons' Prize: International Indigenous Entries *
$1,000 US funds - National Geographic All Roads Festival Prize - (Overall Best Film - All Categories)
The content of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival will include:
* In-Competition Screenings: Recent film productions about Maori, and/or with a Maori person in a primary production
and/or development role; * National Geographic All Roads Invitational: International indigenous programme of short films
and documentaries, presented by National Geographic All Roads Film Project; and * Te Ao Mai Nga Whatu Maori
Retrospective: A retrospective of the best in Maori feature films, documentaries, short films and dramas.
The organisers of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival thank our Patrons - including John Bayly, Huia Brown, Huia Koziol and
Pauline Tangiora - through whose generosity we have been able to include the Patrons' Prize categories.
Supporters of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival include the National Geographic All Roads Film Project, the New Zealand
Ministry of Economic Development, New Zealand Film Commission, Creative New Zealand Te Waka Toi, and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.
The Wairoa Maori Film Festival is to be held in Wairoa, Aotearoa New Zealand, from June 2nd to 6th 2005.
