Play It Strange Trust Media Release
This Tuesday 15th February, the Play It Strange Trust will officially launch the 2005 National Secondary School Songwriting Competition with the CD release of the Top 20 songs from the 2004 competition. The celebration will take place in the Grand Hall at parliament and will include
performances from several of the competition finalists.
The trust will send a copy of the commercially released CD to the Music Department of each secondary school in New
Zealand to encourage students and teachers to get the songwriting bug. The schools will also receive a DVD copy of the
television documentary that followed several of the entrants through the 2004 competition.
The top 30 finalists, spread throughout the country, had their songs recorded in a professional recording studio. The
top 20 take pride of place on the CD. “The CD is the end product of a very special programme”, said trust co-founder and
CEO Mike Chunn. “These young people have taken the creative opportunity and succeeded in the art of songwriting and
performance”.
The CD simply titled “ Play It Strange” will be well priced and in stores late February. “We have boldly included Volume 1 on the CD artwork as we hope this
is the first of many Play It Strange CDs to be released”, said Play It Strange GM, Debbie Little.
The Play It Strange Trust was established in November 2003 for the purpose of encouraging young New Zealanders to develop interests and skills in
music composing and performance. The Trust intends running a range of extracurricular programmes in schools to achieve
its purpose. The Secondary Schools Songwriting Competition is the trust’s flagship programme.
